BlockGuard

Chrome Extension · Content Blocker · Digital Wellbeing

BlockGuard is a free Chrome browser extension designed to block pornographic, adult, and NSFW websites, enforce safe search, and help users maintain focus, productivity, and safer browsing habits. It is available at no cost through the Chrome Web Store and serves individuals, students, parents, and professionals worldwide.

Overview

BlockGuard is a comprehensive content filtering and productivity tool built as a Chrome browser extension. Designed with a privacy-first philosophy, it enables users to block access to over 3 million pornographic and adult websites using an intelligent, real-time filtering system. Beyond adult content blocking, BlockGuard also addresses broader digital wellbeing concerns — including social media distractions, addictive short-form video content, and excessive screen time.

The extension is distributed free of charge and requires no credit card or account registration to get started. All blocking logic runs locally within the browser, ensuring that no browsing data is transmitted to external servers. BlockGuard positions itself as an accessible and privacy-respecting alternative in a market otherwise dominated by paid or subscription-based content filters.

BlockGuard operates across standard and incognito Chrome sessions, making it effective even during private browsing — a capability not offered by many competing extensions.

History & Development

BlockGuard was conceived and developed in 2025 by an independent software developer. The project originated from a personal need for a reliable, free, and privacy-respecting content blocker that could serve both individuals trying to build healthier digital habits and parents seeking safer browsing environments for their children.

Recognizing a gap in the Chrome extension ecosystem — where most capable blockers were either paid, ad-supported, or privacy-invasive — the developer set out to build a solution that was both powerful and free. The first version of BlockGuard was published to the Chrome Web Store in 2025, offering core adult content blocking and keyword filtering capabilities.

Subsequent releases expanded the feature set to include focus modes, usage time limits, safe search enforcement, incognito mode support, short-form content blocking (YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram Reels), and an accountability partner system. The extension has been continually updated based on user feedback and evolving internet browsing patterns.

Development is ongoing, with the core team remaining committed to maintaining and improving the project. BlockGuard is built with a commitment to keeping core features permanently free, in line with its founding mission of accessible digital wellbeing tools for everyone.

Features

BlockGuard offers a wide range of content blocking and productivity features, organized into several functional categories:

Content Blocking

  • Porn & Adult Website Blocking: Automatically blocks access to over 3 million adult, pornographic, and NSFW websites using a continuously updated filtering database.
  • Keyword-Based Blocking: Users can block any website containing specific keywords such as "porn", "NSFW", "gambling", "dating", or custom terms defined by the user.
  • Custom URL Blocking: Allows users to add individual website URLs to a personal block list for personalized protection beyond the default filter.
  • Safe Search Enforcement: Enforces Safe Search across major search engines to reduce exposure to explicit images and video results.
  • Short-Form Content Blocking: Dedicated toggles to block YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Facebook Reels — platforms known for addictive scroll behavior.

Productivity & Focus

  • Focus Mode: Restricts access to distracting websites during user-selected time periods to maintain productivity during work or study sessions.
  • Usage Limits (Screen Time Control): Allows users to set daily time caps for specific websites. Browsing is automatically blocked once the daily limit is reached.
  • Custom Redirects & Motivational Messages: Blocked pages can redirect to a productive destination or display a motivational message chosen by the user.

Protection & Access Control

  • Incognito Mode Support: Keeps all blocking features active during Chrome's private browsing sessions.
  • Long Sentence Protection: Requires users to type a full, predefined sentence before disabling content protection — a mechanism designed to discourage impulsive override attempts.
  • Email Partner Protection (Accountability Mode): Adds a social accountability layer by requiring approval from a designated partner before key protections can be disabled.
  • Whitelist Control: Trusted websites blocked unintentionally can be instantly whitelisted by the user.

Browsing Insights

  • Digital Wellbeing Dashboard: Helps users understand their browsing habits, identify distraction patterns, and track progress toward healthier online behavior.

Privacy & Data Policy

BlockGuard is built around a strict privacy-first philosophy. The extension does not track user browsing activity, does not sell user data, and does not transmit browsing history to any third-party service or server. All content filtering logic is executed locally within the user's browser.

The only personal data optionally collected is an email address — and only when users voluntarily provide it for account or support purposes. User-defined block lists, keyword filters, and whitelist entries are stored locally and remain under the user's control at all times.

Full details are available in the BlockGuard Privacy Policy.

Android App Coming Soon

BlockGuard is currently available exclusively as a Chrome browser extension for desktop users. However, a dedicated BlockGuard Android application is currently in development and is expected to be released in the near future.
